What Is Seasonal Eating?

We can buy and eat many foods all year round, due to being able to ship foods from around the world. Seasonal eating is eating foods at the same time of year they’re grown locally. Seasonal eating involves consuming foods at the same time of year they’re able to be grown locally, rather than being shipped from other countries.

Seasonal Eating Benefits

Eating seasonably has many health benefits:-

  • Higher in nutrients. The nutrients in food declines over time. Purchasing foods grown locally means the time from food being picked to us consuming them is less, meaning they will be fresher and have a stronger flavour (1). It also provides us with the specific nutrients our bodies need during each time of the year (2).
  • Lower in toxins. In season foods require less harmful pesticides to grow (3). To allow foods to be available all year round and protect them from harmful bacteria as they’re transported from across the world, when they’re grown out of season they’re treated with chemical and gas ripening agents, which can have a negative impact on our health and results in a lower amount of nutrients than when foods are naturally grown and ripened locally in season (4).
  • Adds more diversity to our diet. Varying our diet to eat seasonably results in us consuming a variety of different foods, which provides us with a range of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and phytonutrients to help prevent deficiencies (5). Each plant food feeds different types of good bacteria in our gut. For example, cauliflower feeds a different type of good bacteria to broccoli. Eating 30 plants a week is recommended but the greater the number and diversity of the good bacteria in our gut the stronger our immune system (80% of our immune system is in our gut) (6).
  • Better for the environment. The increased energy and resources needed to produce and transport foods out of season from overseas releases large amounts of greenhouse gases, contributing to air pollution and global warming. Eating in season reduces the environmental impact (7).
  • Cheaper. Growing foods locally in season requires less resources and also transportation and storage costs are reduced, making them cheaper for us to buy.
